Taya DeVere understands “trust the reader.” She pulls us along with perfectly factored information without bogging us down in descriptive histories that would only stall the pace of the novel. I was forced to slow myself down to not flip pages too quickly and ruin the story. I just wanted to know what was going to happen!!
The heart-wrenching struggles of the MC are real, are powerful and relatable even as I’ve never experienced what she was going through. Well done! The straight-forward telling of events, without reason or excuse or fluffed meanderings of explanation, make this experience perfect for the reader. I was in this story, and while I typically shy away from “real life” tellings (I’m a fantasy/sci fi girl as I like my fiction fiction) I would recommend this book to everyone. I even ravaged the pages we’re given to tease us for book two. Unnecessary, by the way- I’m already hooked!

I have always been a big fan of this authors writing. I would read her blogs religiously. Her writing has always spoke to me. This book is no different. Once I picked it up, I didn’t put it down until I finished it. Now I patiently wait for the next book in the series to be released. If you’re looking for a book to capture your attention and heart, read this book.

I couldn’t put this down! I bought it to read while flying earlier this morning and finished it before I even boarded my connecting flight! I was intrigued from start to finish and cannot wait for the next book to come out. So thankful for the little teaser for book two
“A beautifully balanced debut about searching for the path to recovery from depression.”

It is unfortunate that in today’s society, many people face depression and anxiety. Anyone who has gone through this or is currently enduring it knows how difficult it is to keep moving forward. There is, however, a way to get away from it, to heal from it; multiple ways, in fact, as long as the right path is taken to recovery. Of course, this is easier said than done and each road has trials and tribulations, so the challenge is: which road works best for one person? Author Taya DeVere has broached this tender topic and has created a beautiful story that has her main character follow two completely different paths on her road to recovering from depression.
A young Scandinavian woman falls into a depression after her father passes away. As she seeps deeper into the dark recesses of her mind, her doctor sets up an appointment for her to see a psychotherapist. As she is about to begin her first appointment, two doors await her. One door will keep her in her home town, attending numerous therapy appointments while also delving into bad habits and poor life decisions; however, small peaks of light find their way through the darkness. The other door leads to her leaving the only home she has ever known to a completely different country with new people and new experiences. A fresh start may be just what she needs and, while hope waits just within arm’s reach, uneasiness and fear threaten to arise. Both doors contain hope, both doors contain uncertainty, both doors contain recovery, both doors contain fear. One door is better than the other, but which one will she take?
Between Two Doors is DeVere’s debut novel and the first in her Borderline trilogy. This story most certainly has a “wow factor” to it for readers have no idea what they will be getting themselves into. Raw, real, vulnerable, and every other feeling one can imagine a single person experiencing is exposed within a single story. Whether a reader has never experienced depression before, has overcome it, or is currently going through it, DeVere brings out the emotions within a person in a true, but healthy way, taking them by the hand and guiding them along a journey that many may not go through in their life, but one that can be related to in some big or small way.
For a debut, DeVere has most certainly impressed for one word truly describes this talented new author’s style to a T: balance. Her writing style flows so smoothly, taking readers on an effortless journey through her character’s struggles. She balances prose, dialog, and character thoughts beautifully and she does not sugarcoat anything. Readers, be prepared, for Between Two Doors may not be an easy read at times. She also balances the two stories told about one single character. Each chapter follows one of the two stories, one of the two lives the main character chooses to live and DeVere gives just the right amount of time in each chapter for each story. It will make readers want to continue one story while eager to continue with the next. Within each of the stories, balance is found in the trials and tribulations the character endures. One door may seem like the obvious choice, but there are good times and bad times regardless of the choice. Not to mention, another feat DeVere has conquered, is the fact that the main character’s name is possibly not even revealed until the very end. It is a small detail a reader may miss, but when one realizes it, it is most certainly impressive on the author’s part.
Beautifully written and so truthfully honest, Between Two Doors is an amazing debut by new author DeVere that covers a sensitive topic in a raw, yet gentle way. It is a story that is definitely difficult to read at times, especially for any reader going through what DeVere’s character is enduring; however, what happens to the character is all too real and it is a battle that must be fought. This story shows the multiple paths a person can take on the road to recovery, on the road to a bigger and better future. It also shows that not every path is perfect and that no one path is without problems. Nevertheless, it is always good to start somewhere when on the road to healing. One cannot hide from the world forever and, at some point, one must wake up, realize they are stuck, and set themselves free, but they should also realize that they are never alone on their journey and someone will always be around to help. Finishing in a way that will make any reader instantly want to pick up the sequel Down Two Paths, Between Two Doors is an impressive debut that should be read by all.
